The Crucial Role of Contract Wallcoverings in Elevating Interior Design for Hospitality, Healthcare, and Commercial Spaces

In the dynamic realm of interior design, the choice of wallcoverings plays a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic and functionality of spaces. This significance is particularly pronounced in the hospitality, healthcare, and commercial industries, where the atmosphere is not just about visual appeal but also about creating an environment that meets specific demands and standards. Contract wallcoverings emerge as indispensable elements in achieving these objectives.

1. Durability and Longevity

In high-traffic areas like hotels, hospitals, and commercial spaces, durability is non-negotiable. Contract wallcoverings are engineered to withstand the wear and tear of daily use, ensuring that the design integrity of a space is preserved over time. This longevity not only safeguards the initial investment in interior design but also minimizes the need for frequent renovations or replacements, making it a cost-effective choice for businesses.

2. Hygiene and Cleanliness

In healthcare settings, maintaining a sterile and hygienic environment is paramount. Contract wallcoverings are designed with materials that are easy to clean, resistant to mold and mildew, and contribute to maintaining a sanitary space. The ability to withstand regular cleaning and disinfection processes is crucial in environments where cleanliness is a top priority for health and safety.

3. Fire Safety Compliance

Compliance with safety regulations is a key consideration for commercial spaces. Contract wallcoverings often come with fire-resistant properties, meeting stringent safety standards required in commercial and hospitality settings. This not only enhances the overall safety of the space but also provides peace of mind for business owners and occupants.

4. Customization for Brand Identity

Commercial establishments often seek to establish a unique brand identity through their interior design. Contract wallcoverings offer a wide range of customization options, from colors and patterns to textures and branding elements. This allows businesses to create a cohesive and branded environment that resonates with their identity, reinforcing a memorable and impactful experience for clients, customers, or patients.

5. Acoustic Performance

In both hospitality and healthcare sectors, creating a peaceful and comfortable environment is crucial for the well-being of occupants. Contract wallcoverings can contribute to the acoustic performance of a space, minimizing noise and creating a more serene atmosphere. This is especially important in hotels, hospitals, and commercial spaces where providing a quiet and focused environment is essential.

As you can see, the careful selection of contract wallcoverings is a strategic investment for businesses in the hospitality, healthcare, and commercial industries. Beyond their aesthetic contributions, these wallcoverings address practical concerns such as durability, hygiene, safety, brand identity, and acoustic performance. By recognizing the unique demands of these industries, Renovate Wallcoverings can help create spaces that not only look impressive but also stand up to the rigors of daily use, enhancing the overall experience for occupants and visitors alike.

Interior Design Styles Cheat Sheet

If you’ve started dipping your toe into the interior design waters and are feeling a little lost, don’t stress! We’re here to help with a little introduction to several popular décor styles with our Interior Design Styles Cheat Sheet.

Create an Inspiring Office Space

Did you know that the way your office is designed can directly affect your productivity? Choosing the right wallpaper is key when designing an office space and can help boost your focus on your day-to-day tasks.

Check out a few of our top tips for using wallpaper to create an inspiring space below.

First, consider what kind of work will be done in the space + who will be using it.

If you're a creative, you'll want to design a space that helps you unleash your imagination and allows you to feel inspired. Bold, bright colors — orange and yellow are believed to inspire creativity, for example — and fun patterns can help push you toward those creative goals. Skip neutral tones, like whites and grays, because they can create a sterile environment and foster a sense of boredom and monotony.

5295_78W8251-01-1334x2000.jpg

If the office space will be primarily used by kids, you'll want to focus on durability, so the materials of the wallpaper used will be just as important as the color or pattern. Look for wallpapers that are scrubbable and washable, and refrain from choosing wallpapers that are made of natural materials such as grasscloth. In a study about which colors are preferred by children, purple came out on top. “Designers may wish to incorporate more cool colors… A wall with a subtle purple hue may support children’s interest in the space” (Read and Upington, 2009, p. 495).

rmk3504wp__rs1ex_2.jpg

For “traditional” adult workspaces where efficiency is a top priority, focus on creating a comfortable environment that will instill a sense of happiness when you begin working each day. Color choice is important here, too - green wallpaper tends to keep the mind fresh and alert and can work as an energizer when you're ready to call it quits, and blue is associated with improved communication and focus. Red wallpaper, on the other hand, can denote aggression and can create additional pressure when you're already stressed - ain’t nobody got time for that!

psw1038rl_ywdd86papyrusweave_2ex_2.jpg

Pattern choice matters, too.

While color choice tends to play a bigger psychological role in affecting overall productivity, pattern choice can dictate the difference between checking off all of those to-dos or just a few. Not only does wallpaper set the entire tone of the room, it also affects our mood, which can then affect productivity. A University of Warwick study demonstrated that happy workers are 12% more productive, and wallpaper is a great way to make you smile at the start of a work day.

Another consideration is how you work - if you tend to get easily distracted (cue me raising my hand), steer clear of elaborate patterns and instead focus on soothing options.

8140_32W8781-01.jpg

Wallpaper is a totally personal choice.

When you're deciding between patterns, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do I want my work to be reflected in my wallpaper pattern?

2. How does this wallpaper make me feel? Am I inspired? Do I feel happy?

3. Will I get bored with this wallpaper pattern or color scheme? Will it annoy me after working for a few hours?

4. Will this wallpaper distract me, or do I think it will help my concentration?

If you’re interested in adding wallpaper to your workspace or if you'd like additional tips for designing a productive office space, we’d love to help!

Warm Up Your Walls This Winter

It’s cold outside, but your home doesn’t have to be. Here are a few of our favorite quick tips to warm up your space with wallpaper.

INCORPORATE TEXTURE.

Add warmth instantly by wrapping your room in cozy, textured wallpaper. Not only will it add depth and visual interest, but textured wallpaper is also perfect for hiding small wall imperfections. Next, add in a sprinkling of chunky woven throw blankets, room-softening window treatments and throw pillows in a variety of complimentary shades and textures, such as velvet, fur and linen. Select accessories in materials like wood, leather and warm metals like copper, bronze and brass to really up your texture game.

 LIGHTING MATTERS

…Especially when it gets dark at lunchtime, am I right? Make sure you have an abundance of several lighting types through your home, such as task lights and table and floor lamps. Add ambiance lighting like candles and string lights to really set the mood, but bulb selection is key - avoid using cool white bulbs as they’re harsh and uninviting. Keep it to soft white lights for the ultimate warm glow.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN.

Selecting wallpaper made from natural materials such as jute, bamboo and cork will instantly add an organic feel to your space, evoking memories of warmer days. Botanical and floral prints can also make it feel like summer all year long. Plants and fresh flowers are beautiful, functional pieces of home decor that helps a house feel like home. Be sure to treat yourself to fresh flowers at your next Trader Joe’s run!

USE RUGS.

Tile, laminate and hardwood can feel especially cold during the winter months - both literally and visually! Not only will rugs add insulation to a chilly room, laying several different rugs will help bring a cozy aesthetic to the space. Don’t be afraid to use accent rugs on top of existing carpet, too – just make sure your accent rugs incorporate complimentary colors.

You Need a Wallpaper Sample

Modern technology is great, right? Unfortunately, it does tend to fall a little short in the home decor world.

Check out our main reasons why we recommend wallpaper samples below.

The image you see on a computer screen is just a rendering of the actual colors.

Images can vary both between different monitors and between monitors and smart phone screens. Want to see this in action? Pull up this blog on your home or office computer. Now, on your smart phone, navigate to this post as well.

Hold your smart phone next to your computer screen, and compare the following image:

How do the image colors vary between your screens?

How do the image colors vary between your screens?

It’s difficult to see if a pattern, color, or texture will work in your space as a whole without a physical sample.

Screens really don’t work well in getting a complete understanding of how wallpaper can pull a room together. Does this pattern work well with the others in the room? Are the textures and colors complimentary?

Images on a screen are typically small, and there’s no guarantee that the image that you’re seeing is a 100% accurate representation - colors could vary, like we saw above, or patterns can appear larger or smaller, for example. Smaller details in patterns can even be missed all together!

home_mb01_20200203_Week06_dt.jpg

You can’t feel texture on a screen.

Sometimes, you can see that there might be texture on a computer image. Other times, the image will look completely flat, and you’ll have no idea a wallpaper is textured until you see it in real life. It’s best to be able to physically feel a wallpaper sample to determine texture.

Wallpaper looks different in different rooms.

We all have that favorite room in our home that gets flooded with natural light and is our happy place, while another always seems to be dark and dreary. Natural light varies in rooms, so it’s important to have a sample in hand in the room the wallpaper will be installed. What looks great on a screen may be too dark or washed out for your own space, and the final appearance of your wallpaper is heavily dependent on the lighting in your room.

Wallpaper looks different at different times of day.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve loved the way a certain wallpaper has looked in the morning sunshine, but come afternoon, I wasn’t a huge fan. You’ll hear us say to “order a sample and live with it for a while.” Tape the sample up and be sure to observe how the colors and overall appearance change throughout the day. Be sure to look at it with artificial lighting, too!

Samples are movable.

Some folks know they want wallpaper, but they don’t know where to put it! We recommend ordering a sample so you can move it from wall to wall and see how it looks.

Your Business Needs a Selfie Wall, Stat

We all want to increase traffic and exposure to our businesses, and one of the easiest (and cheapest) way to do so is by creating a selfie accent wall that features a bold, photo-worthy wallpaper. Every time someone posts a selfie in front of your accent wall, their entire social network gets to see your business, front and center. Here’s the icing on the cake: when followers see their friends and family engaging with your photo wall, they’re more inclined to visit your business and use it themselves, giving you access to hundreds of potential customers you may not have otherwise been able to reach. By creating a built-in selfie space, you’re giving your customers a reason to take more photos, and as a result, promoting your business (for free!) on social media.

photo-1516321497487-e288fb19713f.jpg

Create a stunning photo wall in your business with these simple steps:

1.     Location, location, location.

Carefully consider the layout of your space and choose the perfect location for an accent wall. Where are your clients already taking photos? Is there an area of your store, salon or restaurant that gets tons of daily traffic? How about a wall that’s flooded in natural light?

2. Measure twice, cut once.

Measure the width and height of your chosen feature wall, which we’ll use to calculate the amount of wallpaper needed for your space. We always recommend measuring twice to avoid any wallpaper overages or shortages.

3. Create a beautiful backdrop.

Stop by Renovate Wallcoverings and we’ll help you choose wallcovering that’s not only visually appealing but is reflective of your brand. Don’t be afraid to take risks here and choose bold colors or prints; remember, we want to create a memorable, exciting space that invites your clients to take photos and share their experiences on their socials. We also have the ability to custom print wallcovering, so the sky’s really the limit when it comes to not only the design of your feature wall, but the success of your business.

Easy and Natural DIY Wallpaper Removal

It’s no secret that most people dread removing old, dated wallpaper. Not only can it be time intensive, it can also be super expensive if you hire someone to take it down and you can be subjecting your home and family to yucky chemicals (no thanks!). Here’s how to make your own 100% natural, effective wallpaper remover on the cheap so you can move on to bigger, better, bolder papers.

What You’ll Need

  • White vinegar

  • Hot water

  • Pump sprayer or spray bottle

  • Wallpaper scoring tool

  • Wallpaper utility scraper

Get (Re)movin’

Run a wallpaper scoring tool over the wallpaper you’d like to remove. This will create tiny holes in the paper that will penetrate the paste, but be sure to use a gentle hand as you don’t want to leave marks on your wall.

paper_tiger_in_use.jpg

If any edges are loose, go ahead and peel off the top layer of paper so your remove can really soak in.

Mix 1 part vinegar to 1 part hot water in your pump sprayer or spray bottle. Pump sprayers are great because they can spray a larger area in a shorter amount of time, but it can get a little messy. If you’re using one, make sure you tape off your outlets and cover your floor beforehand. If you’d like to take it slow and steady, use a regular spray bottle.

pinterest_tips_aroundthehouse.jpg

Spray a small section of wallpapered area and let soak for about 15 minutes. This ensures you have time to remove the wallpaper before the remover dries. Repeat the process as necessary and you’ll be quickly and naturally on your way to installing your pretty new wallpaper in no time.

57484739_339493613582639_8327524902101843968_n.jpg

Tips for Trouble Areas

If your paper doesn’t come off easily, repeat the process but remember to focus on a small area at a time to ensure complete removal and to keep your sanity.

Sometimes, it’s helpful to use different scrapers to peel the paper - make sure that you don’t use anything too sharp, though, so you don’t damage the underlying wall.

Good luck, and we’re happy to help you pick out your shiny new paper!

One Wall Does it All: Feature Walls

We’re huge fans of feature walls around here, and for good reason. They immediately create a focal point that catches the eye, and allows you to roll your personality onto the walls of your home or business. Feature walls are also a great place to take design risks because one wall won’t overwhelm a space. The point of a feature wall is to steal attention and to get people talking, so don’t be afraid to push the boundaries.

Here are our top Dos and Don’ts when it comes to feature walls:

DON’T PUT AN ACCENT WALL IN A TINY SPACE.

It will only make it look smaller. If you want a bold color or pattern in a small room, go big or go home - wallpaper the entire room for a dramatic effect.

DO BE CHOOSY ON WHICH WALL YOU CHOOSE TO HIGHLIGHT.

The feature wall should compliment the room’s existing focal point; for example, the wall your TV is mounted on, or the wall behind your headboard. Think about it this way: your wallpaper feature wall will be the peanut butter to the jelly of your room’s natural architecture. If you choose a wall that’s not the natural focal point, you run the risk of the space being too busy and overwhelming.

nanawallpaper1.jpg

DON’T CHOOSE A PATTERN OR COLOR THAT DOESN’T FLOW WITH THE REST OF THE ROOM.

Wallpaper feature walls are a great way to exercise your creativity and take risks, but don’t choose a bold pattern for the sake of being able the choose a bold pattern. Make sure you balance all elements in your room: that includes window treatments, furniture, floor coverings, etc.

DO USE FEATURE WALLS TO DEFINE SPACES.

Accent walls can help define areas in open-concept homes. A feature wall acts as fantastic separation between a dining area and living area, for example.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE WALLPAPER.

This one is pretty obvious, but we hear it in the shop all the time. Our clients are scared to utilize wallpaper because they think it’s going to be a nightmare to remove. This was definitely the case 40 years ago, but remember - this isn’t your granny’s wallpaper! Just like technology, wallpaper paste has advanced leaps and bounds through the years. Not only do we carry peel and stick options, there are several traditional wallpaper pastes that guarantee 100% clean removal with no wall damage.

Wallpaper Fun-damentals

New to the world of wallpaper? Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. Check out a few of our most frequently asked questions below.

What are single rolls, double rolls, and bolts?

Wallpaper is commonly priced by the single roll but is usually sold in double roll or bolt increments (these are interchangeable phrases), because wallpapers are printed in double rolls. If you order 4 single rolls of wallpaper, for example, you’d receive 2 bolts (or double rolls).

Wallpaper Rolls

What do you mean when you refer to a “pattern match”?

The pattern match of wallpapers is incredibly important - it’s what creates a seamless look across an entire wall. There are several different match types. A random match is the easiest to work with, and indicates that each strip of wallpaper can be hung without worrying about matching the pattern at the seams. A straight match matches across the wallpaper, but don’t be intimidated! You’ll easily be able to tell a straight match when you lay two strips together. A drop match wallpaper has a design that matches up across strips both vertically and horizontally. There are multiple types of drop matches (most are half-drop or a quarter drop). This simply means that the pattern will match up with a different spot in the design for the next strip. You can think of a half drop as half of a straight drop because it will match the same spot in the design every other strip. Both drop and straight matches will cause some extra waste as you will need to remove more excess from the top. Patterns with a matches, 24" or more, may require you to buy additional wallpaper rolls to complete the project.

*Tempaper Designs

*Tempaper Designs

What is the difference between prepasted wallpaper and unpasted wallpaper?

Pre-pasted wallpaper already has glue on the back, and its adhesive properties are activated when you apply water to the paste. Unpasted wallpaper requires adhesive to be applied in order to stick to the wall.

When will I receive my wallpaper order?

Nearly all of our wallpaper is custom-ordered (thought we do stock several peel and stick options). If we’re ordering from a local designer or distributor, orders typically take 5 to 7 days to arrive. If your paper is imported from overseas, the lead time would be approximately 10 to 14 days. We also have the ability to print 100% custom wallpaper. Those orders will arrive in approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Why Wallpaper?

Good afternoon, and happy Friday! Nikki here, and today I wanted to briefly discuss three advantages of wallpaper over paint.

paint-wallpaper.jpg

1. Wallpaper is easier to maintain and cheaper over time

Kind of counter-intuitive, right? While vinyl wallpaper has a higher intial investment, a lifecycle analysis indicated that today's wallcoverings now last approximately five times longer than paint. We've seen vinyl wallcoverings stay in pristine condition for 15+ years, whereas a painted surface typically requires periodic cleaning and generally requires repainting every three years to retain it's appearance, on average.

Not convinced? Check out a commercial usage scenario based on information from the Hite Report:

Say you're working with a 384 square foot room. Assuming that the initial cost to prime and paint is $173.00 (or $0.45 per sq. ft.), and that the room will be repainted every 3 years, the cost of maintaining this office over a 15 year period, with paint, will be $1,037.00, provided the cost of material and labor does not increase.  Using vinyl wallcoverings estimated at $1.69 per square foot including cost and installation, we assume a worker will wash the walls every 5 years at a cost of $0.33 per sq. ft., bringing the cost to $1.79 per sq. ft. over a 15 year period to $687.00. In dollar values, the cost of maintaining paint versus wallcoverings is $1,037.00 versus $687.00 over the same period of time, which is savings of over 35%!*

2. The aesthetic appeal is unparalleled

Let's review the possibilities of paint:

  • Flat color: One room, one color.

  • Accent wall: One room, one color except for one uniquely colored wall, typically in a complimentary color.

  • Textured paint: Paint containing various medias to give it texture.

  • Custom paint: Murals using paint.

  • Faux finishes: Custom paint designs that add pattern and depth, such as Venetian plaster.

Now, let's see how wallpaper matches up with these popular painting techniques:

  • Flat Color: Though most people don't opt for solid wallpapers, there are single color wallpapers available.

  • Accent Wall: Can be achieved by utilizing wallpaper on one wall.

  • Textured Paint: There are many varieties of textured wallpaper.

  • Custom Paint: Wallpaper manufacturers have a wide variety of mural wallpaper.

  • Faux Finishes: Most popular faux finishes have their wallpaper counterparts. Personally, I love faux finishes and I have two faux exposed brick accent walls in my own home.

  • Historic Aspect: Can you imagine a Victorian-era home without wallpaper? Me neither.

  • Digital: Computer generated designs custom printed onto wallpaper.

  • Photographic: Consider creating custom wallpaper using family photos.

  • Natural Surface: Natural fibers, such as jute, grasscloth and bamboo, provide an air of luxury to any room.

  • Fabric Walls: Cover your walls with your favorite fabric.

  • Wood Surfaces: Wood veneer provides a cheaper, functional, modern alternative to wood paneling.

Grasscloth wallcoverings.

3. Wallcoverings can bring functionality to a wall

  • Whiteboard/chalkboard wallcovering: Allows the use of dry erase markers or chalk for presentations or notes. Though this is typically used in an office environment, it would be well suited for your child's room to encourage expression and creativity. Somehow, I don't think you'd be too happy if your kid wrote on their painted walls, now would you?

  • Magnetic wallcovering: Allows the use of magnets.

  • Acoustic wallcovering: Though traditionally used in commercial applications, these are more commonly utilized in homes with expensive surround sound systems or home theaters. These wallcoverings are specifically engineered to absorb sound energy.

  • Glow in the dark wallcovering: Create a fun, interactive wall with this type of wallcovering and a black light.

  • Cork wallcovering: Useful as either a bulletin board, a natural sound deadening material, eco-friendly natural wallcovering or a textured wallcovering.

  • Metallic or organic wallcovering: Our wallcoverings contain retail elements, such as copper flakes and mica.
